At age 4, Phoebe received a gift of three beaded Masai bracelets, and began to dream of marrying an African who would give her more of those beautiful beads.

Mary Putnam made many scarves and fabrics and started her career in New York in the 1920's as a fashion designer before moving on to be a painter. This scarf was probably inspired by Indian block print fabrics. She would have loved the ease of the digitial age to research and find fabrics. JHP
